Slamming Soca and Reggae
UNIVERSAL XPRESSION "Oohy Aahy" 2005 This small island band certainly has a big island sound. Production and writing on this CD has so much more depth than so many other releases from this year. So, let’s get things started. Opening things up is 'Jouvert Morning', a real nice pan influenced song that has a very catchy hook. Following that one is, 'Enjoy U-Self' a very up-lifting song with a positive message in ragga soca style. Next up is the title song 'Oohy Aahy', another catchy hook in the chorus that keeps the vibe moving very well. It also offers a remix with a slightly harder sound. Right after that is a warning track if there ever was one. 'I Will' is a man telling a woman what she wants to hear. I’m not sure whether this song is a horn song or a love song. You give it a listen and decide. Soon after that the female vocalist steps up to deliver real nice song in 'Feed Me'. Once again another song that gets you with the smooth production and silky vocals. Next song to mention would be another warning song about how to 'Handle You Business' when it comes to your lady, fellas take note. Directly following that is 'Love You'. The singer sings about how much he is into his woman and how he shows his feelings, some more good advice for keeping a woman happy, fellas note number 3. Not too long after that the female lead is back with the song 'Ces’t Si Bon'. This one is uses the little French influence and delivers are sweet song. Ending things off are two remixes that add some variety to two of the more mid-tempo ragga soca songs. Overall this CD had me wanting more. I was very pleased with the consistency of the songs. This band has a lot to offer and I would have to give is one 4 flags out of 5. This is a must for any real soca lovers’ collection.
